For decades, there has existed the dangerous presumption that African Americans are immune to skin damage. There are some reports of dermatologists going so far as to tell black patients that, because of the higher levels of melanin in their skin, they did not need to wear any sunscreen. While it is true that African Americans contain over three times as much melanin in their skin as Caucasians, it is entirely false that they are immune to skin cancer or sun damage. In fact, just one long session in the hot sun can increase a person’s risk of skin cancer, regardless of skin color. Now that pool season, beach season, and outdoor brunch season is upon us, it’s especially important to take care of your skin.
